SVASE on How to Hire on a Shoestring
Silicon Valley is a very special place to start a company. It is filled with excellent organizations to help a startup company. One of the most respected is SVASE. Although it has been around for years, Friday was the first time that I had attended one of their meetings.
The topic was excellent, “How to Hire Executives on a Shoestring“, which is a big question for all startups. The panel was top quality and was very experienced on the ins and outs of hiring in the valley. But what most impressed me was the quality of the people in the audience.
Many of the audience contributed ideas on how to hire based on their own experience. The biggest tip was not to attempt to find your first key hires on Craigslist. Now some will defend getting such hires from Craigslist, and I know that I have found Craigslist excellent for smaller jobs. But since the first few hires really set the overall tone for the company for many years, you really need to be able to trust each other.
The frustration of finding high quality people in the valley who are not already employed was summed up by a recruiter from Google.
Most of the people who you get from online job ads are the three “uns”: unemployed, unqualified and unmotivated.
